November 10 – 21, 2010

This will be my third tour to Bhutan and it offers a blend of the best of the first two. The Kingdom of Bhutan in the heart of the Himalayas is situated between Tibet to the north, Nepal to the west and India to the south and east. In order to protect its unique cultural heritage, Bhutan admits only a small number of tourists each year.
Bhutan, Land of the Thunder Dragon.

We will explore Western and Central Bhutan, driving over high passes and through dense pine forests, visiting remote valleys, monasteries and museums. Late September to late November is considered to be the best time of the year to visit Bhutan, as it is mild and clear, offering magnificent views of the Himalayas. Bright sunshine keeps the days warm while the temperatures start falling toward freezing at night. We will witness harvest time in Bhutan along with the brilliant fall colours of changing foliage.

We will see Bhutan’s imposing architecture, beautiful artwork and have the opportunity to observe the role of religion in Bhutan. Bhutan is the only country in the world devoted to the Tantric form of Mahayana Buddhism and the influence of the red-robed lama is visible everywhere.

This trip is the perfect opportunity for the adventurous and flexible traveler. Bhutan continues to be one of the top world destinations and it is definitely not to be missed. We will have 10 days and 9 nights to explore this amazing country.

ABOUT MARIAN LEIGHTON

Marian Leighton has been an expatriate from Canada for most of the past two decades. She and her New Zealand husband and their young children spent two years in the 80's in Sumatra, Indonesia. They returned to Canada for two years but the lure of overseas life soon took them to the Middle East. She lived with her family for the past 17 years in Saudi Arabia and only very recently returned home to Canada. Over the last twenty years she travelled extensively with her family but since 2000 has been leading tours to Turkey, Kenya and the Himalayas. She led cultural tours throughout Turkey as well as sailing holidays on the family's catamaran out of Bodrum, Turkey. Since 2004 Marian has worked with Razzu Tuladhar of Samsara Journeys in Kathmandu, Nepal as a tour leader in the Himalayas, primarily for clients from the Middle East, although clients have travelled from as far away as New Zealand, the US, Canada and the UK. Marian leads tours both in Nepal and to Bhutan, Sikkim and Tibet. In the spring of 2007 she took a group of 14 Canadians on a 16 day tour which included a trek in the Annapurnas combined with visits to Kathmandu and Pokhara as well as a 3 night/4 day jungle safari package in the Chitwan National Park. In the fall of 2008 Marian led another successful trek, this time to Kala Patthar above Everest Base Camp. Her exciting tours to Tibet involve flying to Lhasa and travelling overland back to Kathmandu. Tours to Bhutan and Sikkim have been equally successful. Although Marian has returned to Canada she plans to continue to offer tours and treks to the Himalayas. Delighted with the attention to detail that Samsara Journeys provides, many travelers have done repeat tours with Marian and her team.
